FedEx gift expands community access to healthy food

FedEx recently made a generous donation to Grady’s Food As Medicine program to expand our community’s access to nutrition education and wholesome foods.

The approximately $15,000 donation from FedEx Cares expands Grady’s effort to increase access to healthy, affordable food, provide nutrition and cooking education, and improve the health of patients with chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Launched in 2020 in partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Open Hand, Food As Medicine has served more than 3,200 people. These patients learn how to reduce sugar, salt and fat in their diets, read nutrition labels, and plan and prepare healthy meals within a budget. In addition, they receive a weekly “prescription” for fresh fruit and vegetables to take home to their families.

The results have been incredibly positive. For example, patients with diabetes have experienced an average 1.3% reduction in their A1C levels, an important marker in disease management.

Food As Medicine goes a step further via Grady’s Jesse Hill Market, which offers fresh, nutritious food for patients, staff and the surrounding community. It offers healthy choices for grab-and-go meals and snacks thanks to a partnership with Open Hand Atlanta and Good Measure Meals.

Our thanks to FedEx Care for supporting this vital community program.
