Grady granted Certificate of Need for future south Fulton hospital
Grady has secured approval for its planned south Fulton County hospital that will expand access to health care in the metro Atlanta area.
Georgia’s Department of Community Health granted the certificate of need for the 200-bed acute care hospital planned on the same campus as the new freestanding emergency department located south of I-20 in Union City.
The new hospital will relieve pressure at Grady’s downtown campus by redirecting lower acuity patients and ensuring capacity for the trauma, burn, stroke and other key services only Grady can provide. At the same time, it will bring care closer to those currently living in a health care desert, many of whom seek care at Grady today. Lack of health services close to home, in a population with a higher prevalence of chronic disease, results in increased emergency room visits, late-stage disease presentation, and less desirable outcomes.
The new hospital, projected to cost $900 million, will be funded evenly by Grady Health System, Fulton County and private philanthropy. It is expected to begin operations in 2031, following a new medical office building that will open in 2027.
